When it comes time to configure your Volvo XC90, you will notice that there are multiple trim levels available, including the XC90 Excellence, which stands apart with its excessive array of features. The Volvo XC90’s normal trims are the Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription. The XC90 Excellence takes the last of these to the next level with incredible luxury and even more amazing features.
Volvo XC90 vs. XC90 Excellence Seating
One of the first things you will notice that separates these two models is seating. The XC90 can be configured to seat five or seven passengers in two rows of seats while the XC90 Excellence always has two rows of seats but seats four passengers. That is because each passenger has an impressive amount of room, as this is essentially a luxury limousine. Instead of the rear bench seat you would get in an XC90, the XC90 Excellence has two captain’s chairs complete with footrests. Between them, there is a rear center console that has folding trays, cup holders that are heated and cooled, two crystal glasses, and a touchscreen controller.
Depending on the trim level that you choose for the XC90, the seats can get leather or upgraded leather upholstery. On the XC90 Excellence, however, the seats also come standard with heating and ventilation along with massaging functions.
XC90 Base Model vs. XC90 Excellence Other Differences
While the XC90 Inscription can be luxurious with rear window shades, Apple CarPlay, and rear side window sunshades, the XC90 Excellence gives off an even more premium feel. The exterior has a bright trim and 21-inch wheels. Inside, there is a refrigerator, extra sound deadening, and extended leather upholstery. Of course, all these extra features and luxury come at a price. The 2017 XC90 has a starting MSRP of $45,750** to $67,800**, depending on the trim you choose. The 2017 XC90 Excellence starts at $104,900**, a small increase to pay for all the features and power.
The Volvo XC90 vs. XC90 Excellence Engines
There is also a difference in engines between these two models. The XC90 Excellence always has the top T8 engine, the Plug-In Hybrid with a 2-liter supercharged plus turbocharged 4-cylinder and an 87-horsepower electric motor to give you 400 horsepower and 472 pound-feet. If you want any other XC90, you can choose from this engine or the T6, which is essentially the gas component of the T8 and gives you 316 horsepower and 295 pound-feet. The XC90 is also available with a T5, a 250-horsepower, 258-pound-foot 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder.
